N. poeticus and its variety known as N. poeticus var. physaloides are seldom cultivated. The petals are glistening white, and the tiny cup is greenish-yellow rimmed in dark red. Only a few cultivars are in currently cultivation.
Each stem has just one flower. One reason both of the cultivars listed below are so valued is due to their late (for narcissi) flowering period: May! Beautiful when seen in an orchard or next to a few deciduous trees.
Most significant cultivars/varieties:
'Actaea': pure white perianth
golden-yellow cup with bright red edge
N. poeticus var. recurvus (common name: Pheasant's eye): white-yellow with orange
