Flower bulbs in containers

Flower bulbs are great for growing in pots and containers. You could make the containers from wood, or you could buy or borrow some.

Make sure that there are holes in the bottom of the containers, otherwise the soil might become too wet and the flower bulbs will start to rot. You will also need some pot shards or gravel as well as soil. Once the pot shards or gravel are in the container, put a layer of potting compost or soil in next.

Then add the bulbs that will flower last, such as tulips. Cover these tulips with another layer of potting soil. On top of this soil, arrange the bulbs that will flower slightly earlier than the tulips, such as daffodils or hyacinths. Cover these flower bulbs with another layer of potting soil.

The last bulbs to be planted will be the first to flower; examples of these are grape hyacinths (Muscari) or crocuses. By planting layers of flower bulbs, they will come into flower one layer after another. Do you know what this method is called? It’s a ‘lasagne planting’, which is a way of planting that lets you enjoy your flower bulb container for a long time.
