A precious little present

The sultan didn’t give his tulips to just anyone. Only to very important guests would he ever give a few bulbs away as a gift. One such guest was Mr De Busbecq, a nobleman from Flanders who had been sent to Turkey as an envoy. De Busbecq gave the bulbs to his friend, Carolus Clusius who was the head of the Austrian emperor’s botanical garden. There, in that garden, the tulips received a place of honour.
