The bulb trade
Later, Carolus Clusius travelled to our country, where he became a professor at the University of Leiden and also the head of the university’s botanical garden. He took his tulips with him, of course, and conducted all kinds of tests on them. Yet as beautiful and rare as they were, he never sold them. But something happened one night: a number of his most beautiful tulip bulbs were stolen from the garden. And it was these stolen bulbs from Turkey that launched the bulb trade in the Netherlands!
